Presbyterian Church in America Calls Churches to Fast and Pray for Revival

The Presbyterian Church in America has called its churches, campus ministries, officers and members to set aside time for fasting and prayer for revival and renewal during September.

The denomination’s 53rd General Assembly approved the call after considering an overture submitted by Mississippi Valley Presbytery.

The overture asked presbyteries to appoint a suitable day during September 2026, or as soon afterwards as practical, for congregations and members to humble themselves, fast and pray.

The prayers outlined by the denomination include repentance for sins within churches and among ministers, officers and members, alongside prayer for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Christians are also being encouraged to pray for God’s blessing on the preaching of the Word, the conversion of those who do not know Christ, the planting of faithful churches and the advance of the Gospel in local communities, universities and around the world.

General Assembly moderator Mel Duncan encouraged presbyteries to involve congregations, Reformed University Fellowship campus ministries, church officers and individual members.

Sister denominations belonging to the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council were also invited to participate, while presbyteries were encouraged to invite other local evangelical churches to join them.

Churches have begun putting the General Assembly’s call into practice.

Highlands Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland, Mississippi, designated 21 September as a day of fasting and prayer, opening its sanctuary for prayer during the day and holding midday and evening worship services.

The church invited Christians to pray for repentance, spiritual renewal, faithful preaching, conversions, church planting and the spread of the Gospel.

Lakeland Presbyterian Church in Flowood, Mississippi, also observed 21 September as a day of prayer and fasting, inviting Christians to worship, fast and pray for revival.

The denomination’s call began with a proposal from Mississippi Valley Presbytery and was considered by the General Assembly’s Overtures Committee in June.

The committee recommended approving the proposal, as amended, by 130 votes to one, before the General Assembly subsequently adopted the call.

The result is a denomination-wide invitation to spend September seeking spiritual renewal through prayer, fasting and repentance, while praying for more people to come to faith and for the Gospel to spread.
