The Gospel
Christianity is not merely a set of rules or a way to become a better person. It is the story of a good creation, a human rebellion, a broken world, a rescue, a cross, an empty tomb and the promise that one day everything will be made new.
The whole story
To understand the Gospel, it helps to begin at the beginning. The Bible tells one great story: creation, rebellion, fall, rescue, reconciliation and restoration.
In the beginning
God created the world good. Humanity was made in His image, with dignity, purpose, freedom and the capacity to know Him. We were made for relationship with God, with one another and with the creation entrusted to us.
The Christian story does not begin with condemnation. It begins with life, goodness and communion with God.
The rebellion
Humanity chose independence from God. The first rebellion was more than the breaking of a rule: it was the decision to distrust God, reject His authority and decide good and evil on our own terms.
That same instinct still runs through us. We want the gifts of God while resisting the rule of God.
The fall
Rebellion fractured everything. Humanity became alienated from God, from one another and even from itself. Shame, violence, suffering, corruption and death entered the human story.
The Bible’s diagnosis is uncomfortable because it includes every one of us. Sin is not merely something other people do. We all fall short of what we were made to be.
God did not abandon us
The rest of the biblical story is not humanity climbing its way back to God. It is God moving towards humanity.
Through covenant, Israel, the Law, the prophets and centuries of promise, Scripture points towards a rescue that humanity could never achieve for itself.
Jesus Christ
In Jesus, God entered His creation. Jesus revealed the character of God, proclaimed the Kingdom of God, welcomed sinners, confronted hypocrisy, healed the broken and lived in complete faithfulness to the Father.
Christians believe Jesus is not simply a teacher pointing towards God. He is the Son who makes God known.
The Cross
Human rebellion reaches its darkest point at the Cross. The Son of God is rejected and crucified. Yet Christianity makes an astonishing claim: God turns that very act into the means of reconciliation.
Jesus willingly gives Himself for sinners. The seriousness of sin is not ignored, and the love of God is not withdrawn. At the Cross, justice and mercy meet.
The resurrection
Jesus’ death is not the end of the story. Christians proclaim that on the third day He rose from the dead.
The resurrection means death does not have the final word. Sin does not have the final word. Evil does not have the final word.
Reconciliation
Through Christ, the relationship broken by sin can be restored. Forgiveness is not God pretending evil does not matter. Christians believe the cost has been borne by Christ.
Reconciliation with God is offered as grace – not as a reward for the morally impressive, but as a gift received through repentance and faith.
Paradise restored
The Christian hope is larger than simply “going to heaven when you die.” The Bible begins with a good creation and ends with creation renewed.
Revelation closes with death defeated, evil judged, the tree of life restored and God dwelling with His people. What was lost in the beginning is restored in the end.
So what is the Gospel?
The Gospel means “good news.” And the good news becomes personal because you and I are part of this story.
Your life has dignity and purpose because you were created by God and for relationship with Him.
None of us has loved God and neighbour perfectly. We cannot repair that separation by making ourselves good enough.
At the Cross, Christ gave Himself so that forgiveness and reconciliation could be offered to us.
The Christian hope rests not only on a crucified Saviour, but on the risen Christ.
It is not earned by religious performance, moral achievement or pretending that you have everything together.
Turn towards God, trust in Jesus Christ and begin following Him.
Not sure you believe any of this?
You do not have to pretend to be certain. If you have read this far and you are wondering whether God is real, begin with honesty. Speak to Him as honestly as you can.
You could simply pray:
That is enough for a beginning.
Keep asking. Read one of the Gospels – John is a good place to begin – and ask God to show you who Jesus is.
Come to Christ
You do not need to make yourself worthy before coming to Jesus. You cannot. Christianity begins with grace.
Acknowledge your sin. Turn towards God. Put your trust in Jesus Christ – in who He is, in His death for sinners and in His resurrection.
A prayer does not save you because the words themselves have power. But if you are ready to turn to Christ, prayer is a natural way to express repentance and faith.
Salvation is not something you purchase, perform or deserve. It is received as God’s gift.
What now?
If you are beginning to seek God, or if you have decided that you want to follow Jesus, do not worry about having everything figured out immediately. Take the next faithful step.
- Read a Gospel. Start with John and encounter Jesus in His own words and actions.
- Pray honestly. Speak to God every day. Ask for wisdom, forgiveness and help.
- Get a Bible. Begin reading regularly, even if you start with only a small section each day.
- Find a faithful local church. Christianity is not meant to be lived alone.
- Keep seeking truth. Questions are not a reason to stop. Bring them into the light and keep looking.
